2nd Annual No Heat Challenge

September 11th, 2009 at 08:08 pm

For anyone who wasn't around these parts last year this time, a bunch of us entered a challenge to see who could hold off turning on the heat the longest.

There's no special prize if you win, but it's a lot of fun (umm, yeah, right). Let me know if you're in; I'll make a list and try to update it (who's caved, who hasn't) every weekend.

May the best frugalite win!

I am in! I'm in Denver, CO and its already cooling down but with new windows I shouldn't be the first to cave this year, lol.

I would love to be... if we controlled our own heat.

In some old apartment buildings like ours, it is not an option.
We live in a sauna in winter evenings. (higher floors gets much hotter than lower ones, so the person on the first floor, who controls the thermostat, cranks it waay up). So we open wide all our windows in the afternoons.

We close them at night(because we know the cold is coming in the morning), and fall asleep in heat.

In the mornings, however, it is an ice box. Hard to get out of bed. I guess because they turn it off at night and it does not have time to heat up. Maybe also a multi-floor issue.

The joys of old apartment living...

    I won't win, but I'll play.

Gosh, I hadn't even thought about it. It's been pretty hot here (100 today as debtfreeme mentions). I have to stop running the AC first. I think last year we made it to November, though it wasn't much of a "challenge" considering the weather. Wink BAsically, all our friends think we are crazed to not turn on the heat sooner, but I can't compete against the extreme frugalites. You can't win!

I am in too, even tho it gets to freezing here in the mountains in mid October. At least my propane was a lot cheaper this year.

    I live in Arizona.....so I'm in.

Just kidding, I don't think my apartment even has heat.

Nope, cause I consider making a fire in our woodburning potbelly 'turning on'. And we have plenty of wood for the winter so it when the clocks change...

What if we're running our A/C after the challenge starts? We're "down" to highs of around 90 so we're only running for an hour or two a day, but we are still running the AC!

I'm definately in again. I usually can't take it anymore by the end of october.

I am in and this year with no tiny baby I think I can make it a good deal longer.

Course I do have all the windows open an we are enjoying the weather. But air has been off since before Labor day.

I'm in! I'm in Delaware and as of Labor day weekend, our weather is officially fall-like (unusual for us). But I'm going to do my best to hold off on the heat as long as possible. I WAS able to turn off the air 8/31, so at least thats something Smile

I'm in too! (Although my family does not appreciate it!) Been trying to keep the A/C off as much as possible and use the attic fan.

    Who won last year?

I'm all in - and I could win, I lived w/o heat one winter back when I lived by myself. But Hubster has had to put on his 'Grandpa Coat' already just sitting in the house, so I doubt winning, but am in for the fun of it!

I'll play. Doubt I'll win, but since I'm living on unemployment, it behooves me to try.
