Christmas at Fern's place

December 16th, 2007 at 07:06 am

Thought you might like to see some of my decorating for the holidays. I make up for the lack of a fireplace by decorating my 'mantle'...

This is in my dining room. I got the artificial greens for pennies on the dollar at a local church thrift shop.

I haven't had a live tree for many years. It seems a waste of a living thing to use it only for a few weeks and then throw it away. And I'd rather not fuss wrestling a giant tree into the house. I'm perfectly happy with my 3 or 4 tabletop artificial trees. Each one is a little different. And this way, there's a little bit of Xmas in every room, even the bathrooms!

Here's a closeup of some detail on the mantel.

I've hung some ornaments from the dining room chandeleir here.

Too bad you can't really see it clearly here, but i've also hung some old ornaments from the 50s in my kitchen window.

The other day I bought some 'old-fashioned' hair rollers from Walgreenss for about $8. Most of what you find in the stores these days when it comes to rollers is those hot rollers you plug in, but i guess they can do a number on your hair. I bought some foam rollers that are comfortable enough to sleep in. Works for me, as i usually shower at night to save time in the a.m. and i wanted to see what my normally straight hair would look like with more curl.

When i took the curlers out, i made the mistake of using a hairbrush on my hair. They said on the package to comb your hair with your fingers, but with my thick hair that would be impossible. After brushing, i looked like i'd stuck my finger in a light socket. Yikes. Frizz Central.

We're in the middle of our first nor'easter of the season. I haven't been outside yet, but weather reports tell me we have several inches of sleet/ice on the ground with more to come all day. I guess i won't be using my sensitive snow blower on this stuff or it'll end up in repairs again.

The bird feeders are full and the birds are taking full advantage. I dreamt last night of some unusual birds visiting my yard. A barn swallow, for one.

It's all very pretty --- I especially love the ornaments in the kitchen window! Are they hanging off of a curtain bar?
