A No Heat Contest Update

October 4th, 2008 at 01:43 pm

It's great to see so many of you are game for the No Heat Challenge.

Here in Connecticut, the weather has turned decidedly cooler, with highs in the mid 60s during the daytime. This morning it was 38! I think we had a frost last night because I can easily see the white stuff on the roof of my family room from my bedroom window.

I'm going to summarize where we stand now. If any of you have turned on the heat since my original post last weekend, please let me know what day you turned the heat on so I can update the list. Also, if you're willing to share what state you're in, that would be good for further "analysis."

Three cheers for those who are still "in the game" with NO HEAT turned on:

Me, aka fern - Connecticut
monkeymama - California
ME2
wyozozo - Wyoming
debtfreeme
mbkonef
Ima Saver - Georgia
scfr - Texas
snoopycool - Florida

Those who already turned on the heat:
myenglishcastle - October 1
homebody - October 1

The clothes are on the line, hopefully drying. I'm skeptical they will; as I recall, even with temperatures in the 60s, unless direct sun is shining on them all day,it won't be enough to dry damp clothes. It's pretty cloudy out right now. I just hate like the dickens to start using the dryer again. (It's just like turning on the heat.)

debtfreeme is in Northern Cali with me.

My blog says 60 degrees at 7am. I assume that is the coolest it got all night. No heat here. But the AC is off, I am hoping for the year. Yeesh.

We have a bit of an unfair advantage...

We should last longer than others in our area because our house is so insulated though. Inside is almost 80 degrees still.

Perhaps we should come up with a handicapping system? snoopycool & I clearly have an unfair advantage! I could probably count on one hand (and definitely on 2) the number of days last winter we turned on the heat.

Your yard is fabulous. I still get complements on mine, but being gone for 6 weeks, DH didn't keep up on the deadheading. It does get intense. Anyway I feel like I could have written your post with a few changes. I started my new job, still training, and I get up this morning and there are a bunch of ER reports to do for my first job. So I just warned DH I am working all day. I feel the same, grateful for the work, but a day off to do nothing would be nice too.

It has been raining here for the past 2 days so... Oh I look out and it is raining now so it's time for my potted plants to get cut back and hunker down for winter. If it is a mild one, some of the annuals may actually keep blooming.

    thanks monkey mama!

no heat here and it smells lovely after the rain last night. it is cool outside but inside it is toasty warm with no heat, just using long pants for thr first time in months. And of course my comforter since i am still sick. with a fever i wouldn't need any extra heat anyway!

I am in Charlotte NC, and I know that our neighbors have used heat, not sure why, nights are cool, but that is what a blanket is for....

In my case I was up last night in the early hours 3ish, and cold so I shut some windows, which is never a good idea, always better to be cold while sleeping with a blanket, than to be hot at only noon.

I am in Southeastern PA. I thought about turning on the heat this morning as it was down in the 40's overnight and was quite cool in the house. I was not cold sleeping (as I mentioned before, the two mastiffs are wonderful bed heaters) but it was chilly once I got out of bed. I held firm though, no heater on yet here.

I'll join the challenge. I am in Northern California like Monkeymama and Debtfreeme, however, I am in a coastal town, so we do get chillier than Sacto area. I love the idea of keeping the heater off as long as possible. My gas/electric bills for the summer are ~$45 a month. Last winter, I hit a high of $82 and that was in December and February.

Your yard is so beautiful. It's as lovely as a park. I am curious... do you have a big yard (as in 1+ acre) and do you do all the maintenance yourself?

I would like to join the challenge. My gas/electric bill was $131 last month and I hardly used the AC. Now I am hoping to hold off using the heat. We live in northern CA and although we get snow only once in a blue moon, we definitely get some cold, rainy days.

Sorry gang, LOL, I am OUT as of Friday night. We had a low temperature of 36 degrees. Brrrrrrrrrrr . . . . the heat had to be turned on.

I turned on the heat the other night. I am outside Boston. It was 54 in my house ... bbbbrrrrr. And yea, already in the 30's at night here.

The wife made me. We have a 13 month old baby. And I just dusted off the electric blanket .. is that cheating?

Hey I'm in the challenge too Fern. No heat so far for me in Ohio.
