Put It in Park: Log in Your Miles

March 24th, 2010 at 03:29 pm

How's everyone doing with the March Challenge: Put It in Park?

We're approaching the end of the month, which might be a good time to see if you've succeeded in reducing your miles driven.

I accidentally disqualified myself yesterday when I reset my odometer to track my mileage.

How many miles have you clocked in March?

About 110 miles. I bought a new car a week ago today and I have not driven it yet!! My husband thinks I am crazy!

Ooo, I am up to between 500-600 which is below normal for us in the car-culture West.

    Think of it like this...
At around an average 1000 mi per month, a driver would hit the US average yearly mileage of about 12,000-15,000 per year.

    Here is a

    reference for the numbers.

(I am hopefully going to end the month below the average)

Not too bad, but ordinarily my car use is extremely low - normally I'm about 20 miles/ month. (walking to lose weight, pickup change, and can bus 99% of the rest) I'm about 3 miles under that. On a percentage drop, I'm doing well!

171 miles. This is excluding travel to work, but includes travel to the doctor, physical therapy and to see my kids, in addition to normal errands.

I kinda forgot to check the odometer. But I know we use the car a LOT. And this month there have been tons of unusual trips. Like my son got sick at co-op so my husband came and got him, took him home, but still had to come back for the rest of us at the end of the day. My youngest did the same a week later. And we have been to multiple stores over multiple days rather than just one or two per week trying to reduce the grocery budget. In some ways I know we could use the car less, after all if my husband was in work, I couldn't have him get the sick kid, nor could I go to so many stores. So I know I could do better, we just aren't.

I think over all it is working out monetarily with the grocery stores, but every time I make use of the car I cringe thinking how miserably I am doing on this challenge!
