Announcing the 3rd Annual No Heat Contest

September 20th, 2010 at 01:03 pm

The days are growing shorter and there's a nip in the air come evening. You know what that's time for the 3rd annual No Heat Contest!

The rules are simple. The winner of the contest is the person who can hold off turning on the heat longer than anyone else.

I'll leave it to your conscience to decide if using your wood fireplace, stove or space heater is "cheating," but I do think that would provide an unfair advantage. Remember, the idea of the contest is to encourage each other to forestall, for as long as possible, the long winter of oil, natural gas, propane or electric bills to heat our homes.

Here are a few ideas for doing that:

* Throw on an extra sweater.
* Weatherstrip your doors and windows.
* Indulge your Inner Chef to create some fabulous home-cooked meals, and keep that oven door open afterwards (make sure it's turned OFF) to warm your kitchen.
* Let your pets sleep with you.
* Get out the hot cocoa.
* Throw an extra comforter on the bed.
* If all else fails and you can't seem to warm up, visit a friend or your local library!

So who's in?

Well, I am in! I never win cause we always get down to freezing by mid October (already had 40 degree weather), but I do bundle up and try to keep the heat off as long as possible.

I have a small poodle (six pounds) who can not stand the cold. I plug in a heating pad and put in her bed to keep her warm.

  2. creditcardfree Says:

Hmmm...technically I turned it on yesterday to take the chill out of the air. It only ran once, but I guess I'm out. Good luck to all who enter!!

  3. Homebody Says:

I'm out too. I have a granddaughter living with me who is sick with a cold! In fact the heater is starting to come on right now, but I just ran and turned it down because it looks like it is going to be a beautiful sunny day on the North Coast of California.

  4. MonkeyMama Says:

I'm just trying to keep from turning the AC on, at this point. Big Grin

  5. dmontngrey Says:

I'm game, but the turtles are NOT sleeping with me! Wink
I'll have to cave before most due to the animals.

  6. ceejay74 Says:

I'm out already too--turned on the heat for a bit this weekend. I have a sickly 6-month-old to use as an excuse, but truth be told I'm a wuss and probably would've turned it on anyway! Big Grin

  7. HouseHopeful Says:

I'm definitely in, although I never win Smile I just hope to last until mid-October. Every cent counts on my electric/gas bill!

  8. Toyguy1963 Says:

I'm definately in again too. But I usually have to turn on some heat about the end of October.

  9. PatientSaver Says:

Creditcardfree, you can still do it. the contest officially starts today.

  10. CB in the City Says:

I'll give it a try -- but I am perpetually cold and live in Chicago, to boot. However, just trying might save me a few $$$.

  11. My English Castle Says:

I always lose, but I'll try again!

  12. M E 2 Says:

    I am already out too

  13. FrugalTexan75 Says:

Seeing as though our high is still around 90, and the low around 70 .... and I'm not in control of the heat ... I'll let y'all play this out. Smile

  14. PatientSaver Says:

    I'm in!

  15. MonkeyMama Says:

I just had to add, I am in anyway. I always wait as long as possible to turn on the heat. I am just thinking it will be a long while before the thought even crosses my mind. 90 degrees here, too.

  16. creditcardfree Says:

Since it started Monday, I'm in. Zero heat used since that day. I'll see how long the girls and I can hold out using sweaters and blankets!

  17. LittleGopher Says:

I too had the heat on one evening on the weekend - we had guests (WE would have suffered otherwise.) But as long as it started Mon, I'm in!

  18. pretty cheap jewelry Says:

Tempted to turn it on but resisted!

Am graciously bowing out due to the wood stove which will probably be put into service instead of the central heat.

  19. SnoopyCool Says:

    Count me in!

  20. PrincessPerky Says:

    I am in, sorta.

Another from a warm climate. Hopping to make it to Halloween or better yet Thanksgiving.

Right now I actually have to shut windows - well some of them. But not all

  21. My English Castle Says:

We're still in, but it was 40 degrees this morning.
I predict several oven meals and lots of running the dryer to keep us going!

  22. librarylady Says:

I'm in for sure!!! I live in south Texas. We just stopped using the AC yesterday.

  23. Astere Says:

So far I've been a lurker instead of a poster, but I'm in if I'm eligible. Although I get cold if it's below 72(why do inside temperatures always seem colder or warmer than outside?,)I've managed to keep the heat off. I'm in WV and it's currently in the low 50s and damp. Luckily it's supposed to get back up in the low 70s by the weekend, so hopefully I can keep it off until the 3rd or 4th week of October or longer.

To make it more equitable, is there any way to make it more region specific, as people in warmer climes seem to have it easier keeping the heat off longer over those in the northern areas? Just a thought.
